Recognized Physician Specialty and Subspecialty Certificates

Upon being board certified through ABMS, physicians are placed in more than 145 specialties and subspecialties. Some board-certified physicians serve as primary care doctors, while others are specialists who concentrate on specific body systems; age groups; or complex, scientific techniques developed to diagnose or treat certain types of disorders. Board-certified physicians who act as subspecialists have completed training in general medical/surgical specialties, and have taken additional training in more-specific specialties.
